IRISH-AMERICAN
OBITUARIES
"Where
in Ireland did they come from?"
Finding
the place in Ireland where our ancestors lived
prior
to
their journey to the New World has always been a
challenging
task. Very often they did not leave us many
clues
to work with, and this has been a source of
frustration
to
many a genealogical researcher with roots back in
Ireland.
This
dilemma has resulted in many different methods
by
which
we might gain some insight as to the place of
origin
of
our ancestors.
The
Emigrant Bank records, Gravestone
inscriptions,
and sometimes Will & Probate records can
give
us
good clues as to their birthplaces. Naturalization
papers
seldom
have much useful information, especially if the
person
came here in Famine Times, or any time prior to
1906.
Still,
there is a dearth of information for us to work
with.
I
have found a marvelous source of Obituaries and
Death
Notices in several New York City newspapers
which
catered
to the burgeoning community of Irish-Americans
in
this City and the Nation.
I
have gathered some of these notices and I will be
posting
them
at this site as time permits. I have hundreds more
to
post,
and many more yet to gather. The papers also
have
a
wealth of advertisements placed by
Irish-American
businessmen....In
time I will post some of these, too.
So,
take a look at what I have here, and keep in mind
that
while
the folks listed here might not be your
ancestors,
the
Irish generally had large families, so some siblings
of
your
folks might be listed here---who knows?
